Biography

Jane Susan Minot (1814-), youngest daughter of John Sutton Minot and Eliza Hawthorn, co-owner of Paisley Garden estate in Jamaica with her sister Mary Hawthorn Urquhart née Minot (q.v.).

  1. "Minot Jane Susan Daughter of John Sutton Minot and Eliza his Wife Born 22nd September 1814 Baptised 1st October following" in Portland, Jamaica. Her father registered 74 enslaved persons on Paisley Garden estate as receiver and 28 as guardian and trustee of his daughters in the Slave Registers of 1823. The IGI lists John Sutton Minot as born in Portland, Jamaica, in 1784 and 1788, and marrying Eliza in Portland in 1809 and 1813.

By 1841, Mary H and Jane S Minot were living with Jane Hawthorn, age 91, John Mitchell, age 39, Sarah Moss, age 35 and Mary Ann Collins, age 30, all of independent means, and one female servant at 11 North Cresent, Finsbury, Middlesex. In 1851 she was still living at 11 North Cresent, age 40, occupation "None", born in the Island of Jamaica, with her sister Mary Hawthorn Minot listed as head of the household and Jane Susan listed as a visitor, and three female servants. By 1861, she had moved to Portpatrick in Wigtownshire, Scotland (where her sister lived with her husband Rev. Andrew Urquhart who was minister of Portpatrick). In the 1861 census she was living on Main Street, Portpatrick, age 46, Fundholder, with 2 female servants. She was recorded staying with her sister in Dinvin Street, Portpatrick, in the 1861 census, age 35[sic], Annuitant. In the 1881 census she was living at Braefield, Portpatrick, age 66, "Retired Income From Dividends", with her nephew William Urquhart and 2 female servants. In 1891 she was still at Braefield, age 76, "Living on Priv Means", with 2 female servants. Named as an executor on the will of her sister Mary Hawthorn Urqhuart, proved at Wigtownshire Sherrif Court, Will of Mary Hawthorn Urquhart, Wigtown Sherrif Court, proved 22/08/1890, SC19/41/19. No record of her death found in England, Wales or Scotland after 1891.
