Biography

London merchant, probably in the wine-trade, executor with George Hibbert of Nathaniel Phillips of Slebech, and in that capacity awarded the compensation for Pleasant Hill and Phillipsfield in St Thomas-in-the-East in Jamaica.

  1. The partnership between Roger Harries and Wm Harries under the firm Roger Harries and Son dissolved 21/11/1823. Previously he had been a partner with Quarles Harris and Cabel Roope at Oporto under the firm of Harris, Harries and Roope, which was dissolved 31/12/1807. Roger Harries of Regent Square 79 years buried 16/03/1839 at St George Bloomsbury.

  2. Roger Harries was possibly the uncle of Mary Dorothea Phillips, the second wife of Nathaniel Phillips of Slebech. He was involved in the untangling of the Milford bank of Thomas Phillips, his brother-in-law and possibly his nephew, in which Nathaniel Phillips had become involved. The Slebech papers hold 'LETTERS [of 1807-12] from Thomas Philipps of Milford, John Philipps, Bosanquet, Beachcroft and Reeves, R. Harries, J. Brown, E. Jones of Pembroke, E. Fenton, Richard Charles Fenton of Glynamel, William Cozens of Sandyhaven, Williams, Hawkins and Co., Gibbins, Eaton and Gibbins of Swansea, mainly to Nathaniel Phillips of Slebech and London, concerning the Milford Bank owned by Charles Allen Philipps and Thomas Philipps, bankers, of Milford, and the run on the said bank in 1810. With sundry other papers relating thereto, and to the affairs of Nathaniel Phillips, the proceedings respecting the election of Common Council men, politics and the parliamentary election in the county.'
