Biography

The son of Thomas Daniel (1730-1802), brother of Thomas Daniel (1762-1854) 'the King of Bristol' (q.v.) and London partner in the Bristol and London firm of Thomas Daniel & Sons, one of the largest single recipients of slave compensation, notably in Barbados and British Guiana.

  1. In 1851 John Daniel aged 83 West India and Gen. [?] Merchant born Barbody [the underlying image shows clearly 'Barbadoes'] was living in Parsons Green, with daughters Sybilla (a widow aged 47), Eleanor (aged 43) and Ann (aged 39), all born Lambeth Surrey, as well as Thomas D. Hill, nephew aged 28 also a West India merchant. At Parsons Green, on the 10th inst., [i.e. 10/10/1853] John Daniel Esq., in his 85th year. Will of John Daniel merchant of Parsons Green proved 29/06/1854.

  2. John Daniel was reportedly left nothing by his father in 1802: according to a newspaper report all passed to Thomas Daniel (1762-1854), who also reportedly shared the property with John despite their father's intention. However Thomas Daniel senior actually left £5000 to his son John but left all his Jamaican property to his son Thomas junior. His executors were John and Thomas junior.
