Henry Bush

1806 - 1857

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

One of the co-awardees of the compensation for the enslaved people on an estate in Barbados, probably named Applewhaites. Henry Bush was one of the sons and executors of Robert Bush, and through his father was probably involved in the claim through a Chancery suit with John Cobham's estate.

  1. Son of Robert Bush of Clifton, merchant who died in 1829, cousin of George Hilhouse. (One of Robert Bush's other children was John Cobham Bush, Henry Bush's half-brother).

  2. Will of Henry Bush of Clifton, proved 01/05/1857, whose death was registered at Clifton Q1 1857. The will shows that this Henry Bush was the husband of Eleanor Bush, and father of Robert Hilhouse Bush and Henry Stratton Bush. There are at least two other wills for Henry Bush that might be relevant: Henry Bush merchant of Bristol proved 31/08/1853, which is uninformative; and Henry Bush, late of the Old Manor House Keynsham whose will was proved 01/05/1876, leaving £45,000 (this latter was born c. 1818, and might be the son of either of the two above Henry Bushs).

  3. 1841 census shows Henry Bush aged 40 magistrate living at Litfield House Clifton with wife Eleanor also aged 40 and Sarah Hilhouse, again 40. 1851 census shows Henry Bush, Litfield House, Clifton, 'Magistrate, merchant in firm of G.W. Cotton Works employing about 1500 men' aged 45, with his wife E. Bush aged 37, son W.H. Bush 16 [?] 'farmer of 70 acres employing 3 men and boys'.
