Biography

Awarded the compensation with a large group of others, including the Trevelyan family, for the enslaved people on the Beausejour, Tempe, Simon[d], Requin and Sagesse estates on Grenada.  He was the executor (with Sir William Edward Rouse Boughton, q.v.) of Susanna, Lady St John nee Simond (q.v.), whose daughter, who married Sir Henry Halford (q.v.) of Wistow Hall, inherited a legacy secured on the estates.

  1. Born at Newark, the son of Thomas Heron of Chilham Castle, Kent, recorder of Newark and Anne, daughter of Sir Edward Wilmot, bt, MD, Heron was educated by the Rev. John Skynner at Easton, near Stamford, at the same time as Charles Chaplin (1759-1816): for the Chaplin family see Henry Chaplin. Succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his uncle Sir Richard Heron, in 1805. On the death of another uncle, the Revd Robert Heron of Grantham, 1813, he succeeded to considerable property, which was augmented by the his aunt's death shortly afterwards. 'A quirky, quixotic politician, Heron embodied the spirit of the independent country gentleman.' [Oxford DNB] He built up a substantial collection of curious and exotic animals - his menagerie - which Macaulay alluded to: see notes on Heron's political activities in Political legacies. Heron's Notes moves seamlessly between observations on proceedings in the House of Commons or foreign policy (organised chronologically) and personal details - such as when he had a cold - or the various animals he has just acquired.

  2. Sir Robert Heron appears in the Papers of Halford of Wistow in connection with the family estates in Grenada and in a dispute over a bond due from the estate of the late Lady St John to Lady Halford, both in the section containing the correspondence of Sir Henry Halford and his son.
