Biography

James Walter Grimston: Viscount Grimston from 1815 to 1845. Eldest son of James Walter Grimston, 1st Earl of Verulam, and Lady Charlotte Jenkinson. Succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Verulam in November 1845. Awarded part of the compensation for two estates in St Elizabeth, Jamaica, along with Henry Tufton, 11th Earl of Thanet, (q.v.), presumably as co-trustees. The estates were owned by the Foster family. The beneficiaries of the trusts held by the two Earls have not yet been identified: the Earl of Thanet was trustee under the will of Joseph Foster Barham II (q.v.) and the Earl of Verulam was related by marriage to John Barham (q.v., under John [Foster] Barham), but no firm connection has yet been established.

  1. The 1st Earl was born on 26 September 1775 to James Bucknall Grimston, 3rd Viscount Grimston and Harriot Walter. He married Lady Charlotte Jenkinson, daughter of Charles Jenkinson, 1st Earl of Liverpool and Catherine Bisshopp, 11/08/1807.

  2. The 2nd Earl married Elizabeth Joanna Weyland, daughter of Richard Weyland, in 1844. They had six children: Lady Harriot Elizabeth (c.1845–15 August 1888), married Maj.-Gen. Francis Harwood Poore on 6 March 1885; Lady Jane (12 December 1848 – 2 November 1920), married Sir Alfred Jodrell, 4th Baronet on 25 February 1897; James Walter, 3rd Earl of Verulam (1852–1924); Cmdr. Hon. William (7 January 1855 – 10 May 1900); Lady Maud (c.1857 – 3 September 1929), married Maj. Paulyn Rawdon-Hastings, son of the 1st Baron Donington and the 10th Countess of Loudoun; Canon Hon. Robert Grimston (18 April 1860 – 8 July 1928), married Gertrude Villiers. (Children included Conservative politician Robert Grimston, 1st Baron Grimston of Westbury.) Died 17/11/1845 at age 70.

  3. The 2nd Earl's sister, Lady Katherine Grimston, married John Barham (q.v.).
