Biography

Resident on Barbados in the 1830s but in Britain by 1841, awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on Clifden [sic], Clifton Hall, Guinea and one other estate in Barbados.

  1. Son of Lt Gen. Robert Haynes and brother of Richard Haynes (q.v.). In 1845, Robert Haynes  jun. of Thimbleby Lodge, Yorkshire, late Member of Assembly, and proprietor of Barbadoes was shown as a member of the provisional committee of the Barbados General Railway.

  2. Will of Robert Haynes of Thimbleby Lodge Yorkshire who died 17/2/1873 proved by Elizabeth Haynes the widow and William Haynes the son, effects £40,000  resworn January 1876 £35,000. Censuses from 1841 show Robert Haynes (born c. 1795) and Elizabeth Haynes (born c. 1809) at Haymarket Sheffield (1841) and then at Thimbleby Lodge. Given in 1841 two women who were probably daughters of Robert Haynes are shown living with him aged 20 and 22, and that in 1861 the household included both Elizabeth aged 52 and a daughter Jane aged 40, it is likely that Elizabeth was his second wife.

  3. Robert Haynes' daughter Caroline Ann married Rev. Edmund Hinds Knight, the son of Edmund Knight (q.v.) of Barbados: in 1881 the two were shown at Laceby in Lincolnshire, he the Rector of Laceby aged 45 born Barbados and she aged 37 born Thimbleby Lodge, with their five children and four servants.
