Biography

George Anderson was a merchant of Demerary who is known to have moved to London sometime before 1840. The George Anderson identified as merchant of Georgetown in a small award in British Guiana, and the George Anderson who was awarded the compensation for Vereeneging (possibly Vereeniging) and signed for its receipt at the National Debt Office in London, were almost certainly the same man. The George Anderson in other small awards in British Guiana is probably also the same man.

  1. In early 1840 George Anderson was described as 'sometime merchant in Demerary, now in London' in the context of his role as executor of John M'Farquhar or John Macfarquhar, the owner of plantation Johanna.

  2. George Anderson, 'heretofore of the colony of British Guiana, afterwards of Lime-street-square, in the city of London, Merchant, but late of No. 27, Blandford-square', had apparently remained active as a partner in George Anderson & Co. and was described as the owner of the Ogle, Supply and Belmont plantations. George Anderson of 27 Blandford Square was buried aged 55 at All Souls Kensal Green 13/09/1854.

  3. Will of George Anderson merchant of No. 3 Lime Street Square proved 16/09/1854. In the will he left his real estate in Demerara and his personal estate in trust to trustees (including his half-brothers Thomas Smith of Eastwood Park North Britain and Robert Smith of Demerara) for the benefit of his children as tenants in common: he identified his children as Mary Anderson by Sarah Fraser of Demerara and Ellen Georgiana, Ernest George, Maria Cecilia, Alice Mary and Janet Ann Anderson by Mary Haylock of West Watting, Cambridgeshire. These latter five children, with birth-dates varying from 1838 to 1845, were all baptised at St Marylebone 09/05/1848 (the year George Anderson made his will).
