Biography

Awarded the compensation for six enslaved people in Dominica, and was also the beneficiary of one-third of the compensation for the Springfield estate in Dominica, the compensation for which was paid to Edward Kendall (q.v.) as trustee of the marriage settlement of William Lindsay Darling and his wife Anna Rose.

  1. William Lindsay Darling widower married Anna Rose O'Rourke widow 3/10/1821 at St Leonard Streatham. In 1851 William Darling Major General in Army aged 60 born West Indies was living at 15 Catharine Place Bath with daughter Maria aged 30 also born West Indies and two other daughters Rosa 23 and Laura 19 both born abroad [probably France], British subjects. In 1861 William L. Lindsay was at Stroat house, Tidenham Gloucestershire. Will of William Lindsay Darling late of Pwll-y-wrach Glamorganshire, a Lt-General in Her Majesty's Army, who died 08/10/1863, was proved 05/05/1864, effects under £4000. Edward Kendall was among the executors.  

  2. William Lindsay Darling was the brother of Sir Ralph Darling, Governor of Mauritius 1819-1824 and Governor of New South Wales 1825-1831, who had himself had experience of the slave colonies in Grenada in his earlier years. Another brother, Major-General Henry Charles Darling, was Lieutenant-Governor of Tobago 1833-1841; Sir Charles Henry Darling (1809-1870, son of Henry Charles and thus nephew of William Lindsay) held various administrative roles including Lieutenant-Governor of St Lucia 1847-1851 and Governor of Victoria 1863-1866.
