Parliamentary Papers p. 15.
T71/1606: letter from W. Carter, Worthing: 'I have in error received the amount of comp awarded to the claimant bearing the same name as my own wife'; he says he is ready to return it, but Mr Harker will not accept it directly from W. Carter, and needs the sanction of the Commission. 'In the meantine [I] beg to say that when I became aware of the existence of the claim to which this letter refers, both myself and my wife solemenly believed that the five negroes formed part of the property in which my Mrs Carter in her own right is largely interested.'
T71/1593 pp. 215-216: letter dated 17/06/1836 to W. Carter, stating the compensation was given to the wrong claimant, should have gone to Miss Catherine Carter of Jamaica: please give it back to Mr Harker her agent.
