Joseph Sturge and Thomas Harvey, The West Indies in 1837 (London, Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1838) p. 219: the authors refer to Oxford estate as the propery of Edward Barrett, an absentee. 'There are on it three hundred negros, of whom nearly one-third are Baptists'; 'This estate is managed on a liberal plan; although few of the old allowances are continued.' Ibid. p. 221: the authors refer to Oxford and Cambridge as 'two estates belonging to a liberal proprietor in England.' Ibid. p. xlviii: on Cambridge, 'we know we got a good massa in England, and we wish to do everything to oblige him; but if the overseer continues to worry us none of the apprentices will remain when the time is up'.
