Joseph Sturge and Thomas Harvey, The West Indies in 1837 (London, Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1838) p. 263: the authors visited the Holland estate of Gladstone: 'It is a very fine estate with a large number of apprentices'. The estate school was discontinued; 'During slavery the numbers rapidly declined, but are now supposed to be stationary'.
