Left by Alexander Baillie to the nation in 1855 subject to the life interest of his brother Evan Hamilton Baillie (d. 1857) but retained by his nephew Matthew James Higgins until the latter's death in 1868. Accessioned by the National Gallery 1868. Transferred to Tate 1951.
