Established in London in 1739 by the philanthropist Thomas Coram to care for babies at risk of abandonment.
William Williams left his two estates in St Ann together with the enslaved people on them, and further property in St James, in trust to be sold for the benefit of the Foundling Hospital. His disinherited son Gershom Williams appears to have reached an agreement to pay £4500 to the Foundling Hospital in exchange for its claims on the estates and enslaved people in Jamaica.
