Biography

  1. Dorothy Diana Smellie, slave-owner in Kingston and long-term partner of Thomas Legal Yates. Most commonly listed as "free quadroon" but once as "fr. bro." and once as "free mustee". Mother of Eliza Thomas Yates (1808-), Edward Cookson Yates (1809-), Mary Ann Frances Morier Yates (1812-), Robert Grant Watson Yates (1814-), Frances Beckford Yates (1816-), Eliza Proctor Swiney Yates (1819-) Henrietta Sarah Yates (1821-), Emily Margaret Yates (1825-) and Robert Thomas Clement Yates (1828-). All the children were baptised in Kingston except Henrietta who was baptised in St Luke, Chelsea, when Thomas and Dorothy Yates were recorded as married and living in Sloane Street, London, with Thomas as a merchant.

  2. Robert Thomas Clement[s] Yates matriculated Trinity Cambridge 1851 aged 22 born Kingston Jamaica. Genealogical sites state that Elizabeth Proctor Swiney Yates, daughter of Thomas Legal Yates, married William Peyton 1842: the two have corresponding entries for a marriage Q1 1842 at St George Hanover Square. Emily Margaret Yates daughter of Thomas Legal Yates 'General in the Army' married Edward Francis Waldron at Mary Magdalene St Pancras 08/02/1865.

  3. Thomas Legal Yates, bachelor, and Dorothy Diana Smellie, spinster, both of this parish, were married in St George's Hanover Square, 05/07/1834. The will of Thomas Legal Yates (written and proved in 1835) made his wife Dorothy Diana Yates and children Mary Ann Morier Yates, Frances Beckford Yates, Elizabeth Proctor Swiney Yates, Henrietta Breton Yates, Emily Yates and Robert Clement Yates his residuary legatees.

  4. Two of their daughters, Mary Ann age 25 and Frances Beckford Yates age 20, were living with their grandfather Ambrose Yates and other family members at Ballard Cottage, Alverstoke, in the census of 1841. Dorothy Yates, age 45, of independent means, born out of county, was living with her daughter Henrietta, age 15, in a lodging house in Lansells Place, Margate, in 1841.

  5. In 1851, Dorothea Yates, age 60, "landed proprietor", born Scotland, was living at 6 Grafton Road, Marylebone, with her son Robert Yates, age 20, born Kingston Surrey, and grandsons Robert and Charles Seyton [sic - Peyton], both age 7. (Charles Yates Peyton and Thomas Lowless Peyton, children of William Peyton and his wife Elizabeth Proctor Swiny, were baptised 11/01/1843 in Kensington.)

  6. Dorothea D. Yates, widowed, age 77, born Scotland [sic?], "income from houses", was living at Hamilton Villa, Commercial Road, Southampton, in the household of her son-in-law Joseph Lewis, age 53, "Paymaster Royal Navy (Active List) and his wife Henrietta Sarah Lewis, age 43, born Chelsea, Middlesex. (Henrietta Sarah Yates of Alverstoke, daughter of Thomas Legal Yates, "Major Genl", married Joseph Lewis of South Malton Street, in St George's, Hanover Square, 19/03/1850.)

  7. The will of Dorothy Diana Yates, formerly of the island of Jamaica but late of 3 Commercial Road, Southampton, Widow, who died 29/08/1873 at West Hill Road, Brighton, was proved 02/06/1874 by Joseph Lewis of 25 Duke Street, Grosvenor Square, Middlesex, gentleman, on of the executors. Effects under £800. Death of Dorathea Diana Yates age 83 years was recorded Q3 1873 in Brighton, Sussex. Dorothea Diana Yates was buried 03/09/1873 at Alverstoke, Hampshire.
