Estate Information (1)

What is this?

1818
[Number of enslaved people] 25(Tot)

NB that this was distinct from Staple Grove owned by J. P. Mayers (and others). According to a document in the Drax Hall and Drax Hope papers, Barbados Archives, 'An account of Negroes from Staple Grove 1818', the numbers in 1818 were: Living: 25, Increase: 6, Total: 31, Dead: 14. The 25 were divided into 4 gangs: First gang: 15, Second gang: 3, Third gang: 4, Fourth gang: 3.
The document also includes pencil annotations against some of the names of the living such as: ‘Moses good’, ‘Quaco infirm’, ‘Kitty Nancy worthless’ but it is not clear when these annotations were added.
But note that this was clearly not a complete record of the enslaved at Staple Grove. It is also not clear who drew the account up, though Forster Clarke had been Attorney to Drax (q.v.) and to Richard Erle Drax Grosvenor since 1803.
