Estate Information (18)

What is this?

1817
[Number of enslaved people] 18(Tot) 10(F) 8(M)
[Name] [no name given]

'In the possession of Richard Arrowsmith as owner in right of his wife Sarah Arrowsmith who is entitled to the same by virtue of the last will and testament of her late mother Ann Phipps deceased duly enrolled according to law and confirmed by a decree of the High Court of Chancery.'

The Registers reveal numerous family links amongst enslaved people livign on the estate in 1817 (NB that all ages and dates are approximations). Sykey (aged 85 years in 1817) was born in Africa in 1730 and taken to Jamaica by 1760. Her daughter, Kate (aged 57 in 1817) was likely born this year. Kate’s daughters included Elizabeth Brown (aged 37) and Rose (aged 27), also known as Eleanor Phipps. Elizabeth’s children included Sam (aged 15), Dido (aged 9), Kitty (aged 7), and Crommell (aged 5). Rose Phipps’s children included Mary (aged 11), Tom (aged 8) and Sally (also aged 8).

The Rev. Alexander Campbell (q.v., LBS individual page 12742), rector of St Andrew, recorded the baptism of Eleanor Phipps (aged 30) and Mary Ann Phipps (14), ‘[black] slaves on Dick’s Last Shift plantation’, on 13/07/1817.
