Notes |
The relationship between Belmont and Wanseys has not been fully unravelled by LBS. William Laurence had owned Wanseys, and sold it to John Henry Clarke the father and his wife in 1812, who owned the adjoining Clarke's estate, for £18,000, with Laurence taking back a mortgage for the purchase price. Lawrence appears to have foreclosed in 1823 and taken renewed ownership of 69 enslaved people and the estate, then called Belmont. |

[Name] Wanseys
An indenture of 04/05/1776 between John Halliday of Antigua, Edward Parris of Nevis and Thomas Warner and Bertie Entwisle recapitulated Articles of Agreement between Halliday and Parris dated 15/08/1774 for the sale by Halliday of the estate know as Wanseys to Parris for £8000. To secure the payments of the purchase price (in instalments of £2000 and the 4 of £1500), Halliday took a mortgage over both the Wanseys property and Parris' Black Rock estate. Halliday had assumed ownership after the failure of William Wansey of Bristol in the 1760s.
