Caldwell Craig of Tobago

In 1768, Patrick Campbell and Cauldwell [sic] Craig of Tobago sold Sandy Bay Point Lot no. 6 to William Hall and George Gibb. The deed dated 23/04/1768 rehearsed the background, whereby Richard Ottley had agreed to purchase the lot in 1766 but in 1767 had ceded it to Peter Campbell in exchange for Campbell taking on the obligation to pay the British government for it. Campbell and Craig had since entered into a partnership to improve the land and by the new deed agreed to sell it for £750 to William Hall and George Gibb.

Notes

The original purchaser of Sandy Bay division (St Patrick parish) Lot no. 6 was Richard Ottley 12/05/1766 (given as 08/05/1766 in the indenture below); Peter Campbell took over the Lot by taking on Richard Ottley's obligations to William Young (as one of the Commissioners of the sales of land) 23/04/1767; Campbell then brought in Caldwell Craig as partner and assigned one moiety to him; on 23/04/1768, Campbell and Craig sold the land for £750 to George Gibb and William Hall. In 1773 the Present Proprietor was shown as George Gibbs; in 1832 the owner was shown as J. Gordon, Present Possessor c. 1866 were John and Jas. Leith. The estate was still in cultivation in 1862.

No estate called Grafton was recorded in the compensation database, but John Gordon of Newton had one award on an unnamed estate under Tobago no. 28, which could conceivably have been Grafton.
