Notes

According to Hughes-Queree, in the C17th and C18th this was a locality and no large plantation has been identified there earlier than 1803. However, the name John Greenidge appeared as a bounder in Hampton and Carrington from 1710.

In 1822 John Simmons mortgaged to George Gibbs and Robert Bright, business partners of Bristol, England for £11,000 sterling, secured on the Four Square and Harrow plantations, both in St. Philip. Four Square was 289 acres and there were 110 enslaved. The land was appraised @ £35 per acre with a total value of £10,115. The highest appraised male enslaved person was £130; female: £110; boys and girls: £110. The total value of the enslaved was £6,000. Thomas and John Daniel were also creditors of John Simmons for £7,000. See also evolution notes on 1830.
