Robert Allwood, owner of Old Shafton Pen in Westmoreland with 110 enslaved people, sold the land and the majority of the enslaved to Thomas Tate around 1825. He kept ownership of 23 enslaved people, hence this new estate. It's not clear if they were employed in domestic roles or if he kept a small portion of the land as well. |
