Associated Claims (1)

£8,558 2S 2D
Tentative association only. The SPG claim in the compensation records was labelled 'Codrington', which has not been found in the Slave Registers, whereas Uphill was shown as owned by the SPG 1817-1832, with over 200 enslaved people rather than the 410 in the compensation claim.

Notes

The estate was owned by 'The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts'. The returns in the Barbados Slave Registers were by Foster Clarke as attorney to the Society. James Heywood Markland was the Society's Treasurer. The Uphill estate was founded by Christopher Codrington and turned over to the Society in 1703. The Uphill estate appears to have been one part of a single compensation award under 'Codrington': see notes on the claim Barbados 4215 [410 enslaved] and on the 1832 return for the College estate.
