Originally an essay in German on the customs of the Nairs of Malabar, transformed into a romance at the instigation of Schiller and published c. 1801 in Journal der Romane, then translated by Lawrence himself into French and English, the latter published in 1811. Praised by Shelley and one of the influences on his Queen Mab (1813).
