1773 - 1840
James Henry Lawrence, Kt of Malta [given in the compensation records simply as James Lawrence], eldest son of Richard James Lawrence (c. 1745-1830) of Fairfield Jamaica and St Marylebone. Known as 'Chevalier Lawrence', he has an entry in the ODNB as 'writer'. The entry, which identifies him as the son of Richard James Lawrence of Fairfield and Mary Hall, 'also of a Creole family', comments that he 'was apparently never at a loss for money' with no further curiosity about the sources of his wealth.
