27th Apr 1820 - 11th Nov 1881
Lydia Campbell (1820-1881), daughter of William Campbell (q.v.), whose representatives were awarded compensation for ownership of enslaved persons in Tobago. William Collow had had title to the estate and presumably a share in it came to Lydia Campbell through her grandmother, Lydia nee Collow, William Collow's sister.
Born 27/04/1820 and baptised 13/06/1820 in Peebles, Scotland, the 3rd of 4 children born to William Campbell, an army officer, and Mary Louisa Wakeley. Her mother died some point between 1823 and 1832, when her father had three more children with his second wife, Margaret Haldane Campbell née Robertson (q.v.). Another son, John R. Campbell, was born in Peebles c. 1828, whether his mother was Mary Louisa or Margaret is unclear. Her father died in 1857.
In the censuses of 1861 and 1871 she was living at Roseville, Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire, with her stepmother, 2 sisters, and 2 female servants. In 1871 there were two visitors staying at the property, Jane Robertson age 64 and Eliza Robertson age 15, probably relatives of her stepmother whose maiden name was Robertson. Margaret Haldane Campbell died in 1880 and in the census of 1881, Lydia was still at the same address, occupation "Int.[erest] of Money", with her 2 sisters and 1 female servant.
