Biography

Georgiana or Georgina Prentice, owner of enslaved persons in Barbados, the compensation for whom was awarded to her mother Eliza Prentice (q.v.) as her guardian. Sister of Catherine Prentice (q.v.).

  1. Online family trees show Georgiana Prentice born 12/08/1819 in Armagh, Co. Armagh, Ireland, the daughter of George Prentice and Eliza Jane née Kidd. She had 2 siblings: Thomas Augustus (born 08/03/1815 in Newry, Co. Down) and Catherine Anne (born 30/06/1817 in Newry, Co. Down). George Prentice died in Barbados, 18/06/1830. Eliza was living in Ireland when she claimed for compensation.

  2. In the 1851 census, Georgina was age 31, "Wife of Edward Anderson [of] Dublin", a visitor in the household of her brother-in-law Joseph Edward Addison (who had married Catherine Prentice and was Adjunct and Secretary of the Royal Military Asylum for Children of Soldiers of the Regular Army in Chelsea, Middlesex). She was a widow in 1856 when she married Thomas Graham Balfour, who was also listed as surgeon of the Royal Military Asylum in Chelsea in the 1851 census. In 1861 Thomas and Georgina were living at 10 Sumner Place, Kensington, ages 48 and 40 with their son Thomas G. age 2 months and 3 female servants. They were still at 10 Sumner Place in 1871. By 1881 they had moved to Coombe Lodge, Inner Park Road, Wandsworth.

  3. Both Thomas Graham Balfour (1813-1891) and the son [Thomas] Graham Balfour (1858-1929) have entries in the ODNB.

  4. Death of Georgina Prentice age 69 registered in Wandsworth, Q4, 1888.
