Merchant of Roseau, in partnership with James Laing Bremner and Adam Paterson (both of whom q.v.). He served as Acting Governor of Dominica 1843-5. No death date or probate has yet been found for him by LBS.
Married, firstly, on 16/5/1820, was to Elizabeth Jane Bremner, who was born 2/8/1802 in Dominica and died there 20/4/1822, having produced two children who died at birth. The Hon Dugald Stewart Laidlaw married Henrietta D'Auglebarme [sic], daughter of John Peter D'Auglebarme [sic] and niece of Hon. Charles Bertrand, at Dominica 10/12/1829. Dugald Stewart Laidlaw of Dominica married at St Kitts 17/07/1838 Meta Jane, daughter of Henry Trew, Collector of Customs.
Indenture dated 09/07/1823 between John Laidlaw of Dominica Esquire and Mary his wife on the one part and John Bruce late of the said island now at Sierra Leone and Dugald Laidlaw of the same island of the other part. Whereas by indenture of 26/03/1818 between John Neave of Exeter Esquire of the one part and John Laidlaw of the other, John Neave in consideration of £8,500 paid by John Laidlaw confirmed to him that sugar plantation in the parish of St John called Sugar Loaf and slaves and one moity was for John Laidlaw, one quarter for John Bruce and one quarter for Dugald Laidlaw. John Laidlaw confirms one moity to them.
