Biography

Awarded part of the compensation for Cornwall estate in Westmoreland, the former estate of Matthew 'Monk' Lewis, having counterclaimed as entitled to 1/4 of £5000, and separately awarded with family members part of the compensation for Stewart Castle in Trelawny.

  1. John Shedden was Matthew 'Monk' Lewis' brother-in-law, having married Sophia Elizabeth Lewis in 1804. Matthew Lewis senior had by a codicil in 1804 revoked a bequest to his daughter Sophia Elizabeth Lewis of £13,300 plus £1,700 on her marriage to John Sheddon [sic], on the grounds that he had made provision for her under a marriage settlement, but left intact a bequest of a share in £5000 originally under Matthew Lewis' own marriage settlement.

  2. Son of Robert Shedden (q.v.) and Agatha Wells. "John, a colonel in the army, of Efford and Eastonton, in Hampshire. Col. Shedden m. Sophia, daughter of Matthew Lewis, esq. under-secretary of war, and co-heir, with her sister Fanny Maria Lady Lushington, of M. G. Lewis, esq. M.P. by whom he has three sons and two daughters, viz. Lewis, captain of the 15th Hussars. Goodrich, captain of the 8th Hussars. Lindsay, of the 17th Lancers. Adelaide, m[arried] to Major Joseph Pringle Taylor, and has issue. Millicent."

  3. John Shedden married Sophia Elizabeth Lewis 18/01/1804 at St Marylebone in London. Sophia Elizabeth 'died of an apoplectic fit' aged 38, wife of Colonel John Shedden of Elms near Lymington c. 1819.  Will of John Shedden of The Elms near Lymington Hampshire proved 04/05/1843.
