Owner of Fontenoy estate in St George, Grenada.
According to an unsourced online site (www.geni.com) Benjamin Ventour was born c. 1799, married Sophia Smith and was the father of Sophia (1825-) and Madaleine (1826-).
Ventour's wife Sophia was a signatory to the lease and sale of 52 enslaved people by Benjamin to Owsley Rowley in 1825 and 1832.
A collection of petitions dated 08/12/1866 claiming rights on escheated property in Grenada, held at the National Archives in London includes: petition from Madeline Pavy for property of Benjamin Ventour, deceased; petition from nephews and niece of S. Ventour [Thomas Smith, George Smith, Frederick Smith, Charlotte Sophia Smith], Sophia Ventour and trustees of Sophia Ventour [William Simmons and William Steele].
The initial lease and subsequent sale of this group of enslaved people is set out in a document digitised in the Familysearch microfilm 1563380 pp. 290-298 and transcribed by Jim Smith, http://agenealogyhunt.blogspot.com/2010/07/part-322s-smith-robertson-genealogy.html?m=1 [accessed 16/03/2020].
