John Adams Carter was a 'silversmith, jeweller and hardwareman' as partner in Glover, Shelley and Carter (q.v.) of 144 Leadenhall Street until its dissolution in 1841: he corresponded with the Commissoners from this address in 1835 and was shown there in 1838. He was born in Jamaica, was on the island in the early 1830s, and possibly returned there later.
Dorothy Simes Carter, age 7 years 6 months, and John Adams Carter (no age given), both children of William and Sarah Carter, were baptised in St Ann, Jamaica, 04/06/1807.
John Adams Carter's son, Godfrey Downes Carter (Australian politican and merchant), was born in Jamaica in 1830, and John Adams Carter is described as 'merchant and planter' and his wife as Selina Grace née Adams in the entry for Godfrey Downes Carter in the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
John Adams Carter and Selina Grace Clark Adams were married at St Marks Kennington 22/09/1829. They were living at Woodville Hall, Forest Hill, in the census of 1851, when John Adams Carter (aged 45 [sic] born Jamaica) was described as 'Magistrate of Jamaica, merchant of London'. John Adams Carter is shown dying 03/12/1870 in Bromley aged 68.
