Biography

MP for Linlithgow Burghs 1807-12.  Son of William Maxwell of Carriden (d. 1771, q.v), which the younger Maxwell sold in 1814, and nephew of Patrick Maxwell of Grenada (q.v.). Erstwhile owner of Richmond and Howard's estates under Antigua Claim No. 397, for which his administrator claimed, as well as trust beneficiary of the Preference estate in Grenada, of which his uncle Patrick Maxwell of Grenada had been mortgagee-in-possession until the latter's death c. 1790.

  1. MP for Linlithgow Burghs 1807-1812.

  2. William Maxwell formerly of Carriden but more recently of Abercromby Place Edinburgh transferred Richmond and Howard's estate to Edward Ellice and William Holden 1816; he had sought permission from Parliament by petition to transfer 322 slaves to Demerara.

William Maxwell had transferred the estate to Edward Ellice and Wm Holden as assignees of the London merchants John Henderson and Archibald Neilson in 1816, and it appeared as the 'trust estate' of William Maxwell in 1817 and 1824.
