Biography

Awarded a part share in the compensation for the enslaved people on Mount Annan estate in Trinidad. Most likely a minor and related to her guardian Richard Coppinger, who registered the enslaved people on her behalf although the award was made in the name of 'L. Coppinger'. The enslaved people on the estate had been registered in 1828 by Stephen Coppinger as owner.

  1. In 1881 Louisa Coppinger, age 53, unmarried, born Trinidad, was living at 7 Hanover Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, a lodger at the house of Sarah E. Cook. In 1901 Louisa M. Coppinger, age 76, single, "Sculp. Artist" living on own account, was a lodger in the house of Thomas H. Jones in Northumberland Place Paddington.

  2. Will of Louisa Margaret Coppinger of 21 Connaught Terrace Hove spinster who died 02/02/1913 proved at Lewes 10/04/1913 effects £1018 2s 4d.

  3. There might be a connection with Julia Coppinger of Manchester Street, Manchester Square, whose will was proved 10/11/1810, who was a slave-owner in St Croix. She left monetary legacies to family in Ireland, including to the sons of Peter Coppinger late of 'Santa Croix'. She freed her 'negroes' Barbary John and Mary in Santa Croix, and left £100 to her maid servant Peggy together with passage back to St Croix if she chose. Her residuary legatee and executor was Nicholas Tuite Selby of Henrietta Street Covent Garden, probably the grandson of Nicholas Tuite (q.v.).
