1784 - 1835
Merchant in Kingston Jamaica, in partnership with James Cockburn (q.v.) in Cockburn & Yates (q.v.) and son of Ambrose Nicholas Yates (q.v.), who returned to Britain in time to file claims, but who then subsequently died. Given in the records as Thomas Legal Yates.
Compensation was paid in several awards for which Yates filed to his executor Barnaby Maddan (Port Royal Nos. 3, 172 and 216; St Andrew Nos. 197, 491 and 522; St George No. 205). In addition, James Cockburn filed claims on behalf of Thomas Legall Yates and himself as mortgagees (Port Royal No. 76), trustees (Kingston No. 669) and assignees (Kingston No. 1490). Yates himself counterclaimed, apparently unsuccessfully, on St David No. 86, Port Royal No. 180; and St Thomas-in-the-East No. 342.
These two latter claims identify him as of Brockhurst Lodge Hampshire (T71/1195 counterclaim on Port Royal No. 180; T71/867 St Thomas-in-the-East No. 342). Most other claims specify him as an absentee.
