Biography

Trustees for Richard Worthington Roberts and for Charlotte Howard (née Bolton) and Frank Howard, the latter two being reversionaries on Roberts' death, were awarded the compensation for enslaved people on Upper Diamond in St Vincent. The ownership appears to have flowed from Richard Worthington Roberts' deceased wife Sophia Mary nee Bolton. No records of Richard Worthington Roberts' career beyond the period of compensation, or of his death, have yet been traced, beyond the description of him as 'now residing at Woolwich...Surgeon General and Inspector to the Royal Artillery' in his wife's will of 1832.

  1. Son of Rev. John Roberts, Archdeacon of Merioneth. Richard Worthington Roberts married Sophia Mary Bolton at St Martin-in-the-Fields Westminster 02/12/1815. He was described as assistant surgeon general ordnance-department, and she as eldest daughter of the late Sir George Bolton of Chepstow Co. Monmouth.

  2. Will of Sophia Mary Roberts formerly Bolton wife of Woolwich Kent proved 25/9/1832. In the will she describes her husband as 'now residing at Woolwich...Surgeon General and Inspector to the Royal Artillery', and elaborately sets out the background to the ownership of Upper Diamond between her mother Dame Catharine Bolton, herself and her husband, and her sister Charlotte Augusta, then the wife of Thomas Wallis.

  3. Sir George Bolton as the 'owner' of Dido, 'a female negro belonging to Sir George Bolton' who was buried at Tidenham Gloucestershire 24/11/1805, is the subject of a brief note, In search of Dido, which reveals nothing about Dido but contains details of Sir George Bolton's ownership of the Upper Diamond estate.
