Biography

Emanuel Martinij, London, was awarded compensation for ownership of 12 enslaved people as owner-in-fee in right of his wife. 'Jane Martinij the wife of the claimant being examined separate and apart from her husband assented before the Board to the payment of the compensation money to her husband'. Emanuel Martinij of the City of London had applied for a license to marry Jane Jones at St James, Bath 12/04/1830.

  1. Emanuel Martiny and his wife Jane had their son Alexander Mackay Martiny baptised in Kennington, Surrey, 10/05/1832 and the same couple who had their daughter Frances Jane Martiny baptised in St Mark's, Kennington, 18/09/1833. The baptism record of Alexander shows Emanuel's abode as Grosvenor Place and his occupation as "In the Ordnance Office". An Emanuel Martiny was a junior clerk under the Clerk of Ordnance in 1841 and a senior clerk in the Store Account Examiner's Office in 1851. Alexander Mackay Martiny died 25/11/1872 at 21 Oseney Crescent, Kentish Town, a bachelor; his executor was his father Emanuel Martiny of the same address (effects under £450).

  2. “The Will of Emanuel Martiny formerly of the Ordnance Office in the Tower of London afterwards First Class Clerk in the War Office Pall Mall but late of 21 Oseney-crescent Camden-road in the County of Middlesex Esquire who died 27 March 1875 at 21 Oseney-crescent was proved at the Principal Registry by Frances Jane Martiny of 21 Oseney-crescent Spinster the Daughter the sole Executrix.” Effects under £2000.
