Biography

Jane Morison, born 03/10/1795 and baptised in Kingston, Jamaica, 21/11/1796 on the same day as her sister Mary, both daughters of Lydia Christian, "a mulatto woman" by John Morison.

Probably Jane Morison, daughter of John Morison, a West India planter, who married James Hozier in Bath Abbey in 1842 and who married for a second time, to James O'Loughlin, in Paddington in 1849. James Hozier was a wealthy Kingston merchant, probably born in Ballinasloe in Ireland, who had relocated to England by 1841. James O'Loughlin was a doctor, also from Ballinasloe. Jane was the sister of Mary Morison. Their mother's name is not known, although Mary Morison is given as a 'free quadroon' in her children's baptism records.

The four enslaved people in this award may have been registered on behalf of her niece Jane Morison Gunter (daughter of Mary Morison). Jane Morison registered four enslaved people in Kingston in 1829 as guardian of Jane Gunter.

Jane lived at 27 Queens Terrace, Paddington, in 1851, age 50, born in Jamaica, with James O'Loughin, age 51, 'surgeon not in practice', born in Tipperary, Ireland, and a son (presumably from James's earlier marriage, with an unclear name), age 19, born in West Port, Co. Mayo, Ireland. She was at 14 Queens Terrace in the census of 1861, 'fundholder', age 65, with two servants. She was widowed, age 70, at 142 Queens Road in 1871.
