Half-brother of Thomas Legall Yates (I) (1753-1832) and father of Thomas Legall Yates (II) (1784-1835) and Royal Navy purser and owner of enslaved people at Exeter, Port Royal Jamaica.
In 1841 Ambrose Yates, aged 85 'Navy' was living at Ballard Cottage, Alverstoke Hampshire with Robert Yates (58, Navy), Mary Yates (40), Frances (40), Mary Ann (25), Francis Beckford Yates (20), Mary Jane (15), Frances Sophia (15), Margaret (13), Capel (female, 11), Isabella (8), Charlotte (7), Seymour (4) and George (2). Ambrose, Robert, Mary and Mary Ann were born outside the parish. Death of Ambrose Nicholas Yates registered Alverstoke Hampshire Q2 1844.
Born about 1757. Naval storekeeper 1803-4. Relationship with A.Ezekiel produced a child, Ballard James Yates (b. 14/01/1816, baptised 21/09/1817, 'quadroon'). Married Frances [Beckford, possibly the illegitimate daughter of one of the two Ballard Beckfords), with whom he had (1) Robert Ballard Yates (b. 1783) (2) George Yates (1787-1804) (3) Hugh Seymour Yates.

According to a genealogical website, Ambrose Nicholas Yates, b. 23/08/1756, was the son of Ambrose Cramer and Mary Yates and was baptised Ambrose Nicholas Cramer. Thomas Legall Yates was the son of Edward Vernon Yates and Mary Yates (probably née Legall), and was baptised 09/07/1753.
