Son of William Rhodes James III (1755-1795) and Rachel Allen Jarrett (the daughter of Herbert Newton Jarrett) and brother of William Rhodes James IV (1786-1842, q.v.).
Married Jane Caroline Vidal (1796-1880, daughter of John James Vidal, q.v.) 02/03/1815; died Clifton Bristol Q2 1840. Will of Herbert Jarrett James of Spanish town Island of Jamaica proved 08/05/1840, effects under £10,000.
In a codicil dated 04/01/1840 to this will Herbert Jarrett James recorded that his three sons (William Rhodes James, John Vidal James and Richard Boucher James) were desirous of settling in South Australia, and he had bought land there.
