Biography

  1. “Mary Johnson was the mistress (“housekeeper”) of planter John Malcolm who owned the Argyle Estate in Hanover, Jamaica until his death in 1830. John Malcolm’s will of 1829 (proved in 1834) (q.v.) refers to Mary Johnson as his “housekeeper” and states that he has 5 children with her. The children are: George Malcolm, Sarah Johnson Malcolm, Mary Ann Malcolm, Edgar Corrie Malcolm, Neill Malcolm. They are all named beneficiaries in the will.”

  2. “Documents found in the archives show John Malcolm acting as witness to official slave registrations by Mary Johnson across the period 1817 to 1829.”
