Biography

Sarah Clutterbuck, probably daughter of William Balfour of Martha Brae (q.v.) and sister of William Balfour of Edinburgh and Jamaica (also whom q.v.), and certainly wife of Lewis Clutterbuck, was awarded the compensation for twelve enslaved people in St James Jamaica and claimed apparently unsuccessfully for the compensation for a further 98 people on Retirement in St Ann Jamaica. 

  1. In 1851 Sarah Clutterbuck, born Jamaica, aged 56 [sic] was living at Newark Park with her husband Lewis aged 57 'gentleman JP' and 3 servants. In 1861 she was shown as aged '75' annuitant living at Newark Park with her daughter Sarah Catherine aged 40 and four sons aged 29 to 39, three clergyman and an MD. The death of a Sarah Clutterbuck aged 80 was registered at Chipping S[odbury] Q3 1867.   

  2. Sarah Balfour, 2nd daughter of William Balfour of Martha Brae Jamaica, had married Lewis Clutterbuck (1794-1861), the son of Rev. Lewis Clutterbuck of Newark Park, 16/12/1819 at St Michaels Bristol.

Balfour esq., and asks 'in what way am I to proceed to procure the money as a personal attendance as specified in the letter would be expensive and inconvenient.'
