Biography

Resident slave-owner in St Mary, Jamaica.

Eleanor Heslop and Charlotte Heslop, "free persons of colour" were baptised in St Mary, 01/02/1815. Four "free quadroon" children of William Heslop were baptised in St Mary, 02/06/1819 with no mother's name given: Jane (born 1814), Alexander (born 1817), Dinah (born 1819) and Elizabeth Susanna (born 1818).
Will of William Heslop of St Mary Middlesex Jamaica proved 31/03/1847. Sisters Ann Kirk of Conduit Street, Leicester. He left his residuary estate to his six natural children: Mary Campbell (wife of James Campbell), Eliza Heslop (widow), Alexander Heslop (barrister at law, married to Emma), Eleanor Fairweather (wife of Andrew Fairweather), Charlotte Baines (wife of George Greville Baines) and Ann Heslop. The reversionary interest in an estate called Belmont in St Andrew to any children of his daughter Ann Heslop. Note the first page of the will is missing so an earlier reference to his daughter Eliza Heslop has not been read.
Alexander Fairweather, husband of Eleanor Heslop, is likely the Andrew Fairweather named as a "quadroon" son of Robert Fairweather in the will of his father, proved in 1844.
George Greville Baynes [sic], son of George Baynes and Elizabeth his wife, "free quadroons", was born 12/06/1811 and baptised 17/07/1811 in Kingston and awarded compensation in his own right as a slave-owner.
Charlotte Heslop married George Greville Baines (date unknown). They had four children baptised in Kingston: George heslop (1834), William George (1835), Charlotte Heslop (1839) and Edgar Campbell (1845).

Payment of just debts and funeral expenses.

All my estate real and personal subject to the legacies and annuities hereinafter mentioned.

To my son Alexander Heslop at present in England, my gold watch and its appendages and my wearing apparel.

To Miss Charlotte Allan of Kingston £50 Jamaica currency as a mark of my esteem and respect for her.

To my servant John Kawson £20 Jamaican currency.

To my grand-daughter Charlotte Allan Heslop, daughter of my daughter Eliza Heslop widow, £300 Jamaica currency at age 10 or marriage. In default to her mother.

To my grandchildren, the children of James Campbell of Kingston, storekeeper and Mary his wife, £100 each.

To my grandchildren, the children of George Greville Baines of Kingston, gentleman, and Charlotte his wife, £100 each.

To my grandchildren, the children of Alexander Fairweather of St Mary, planter, and Eleanor his wife, £100 each.

To my grandchildren, the children of my son Alexander Heslop of Kingston, Barrister-at-law and Emma his wife, £100 each.

All legacies to grandchildren at age 18 or marriage. These legacies to be invested in Island securities to be invested in the names of the parents and given to the grandchildren with interest and dividends from time to time.

To Jane Bell and William Bell, the children of William Bell of Annetto Bay and Elizabeth his wife, £50 Jamaica currency each.

To my daughter Ann Heslop an annuity of £40 each year for life.

My reversionary interest on the death of my daughter Ann Heslop in a plantation called Belmont in St Andrew to any children of my daughter Ann Heslop living at the time of her death as tenants in common. In default then it to form part of my residuary estate.

All rest and remainder to my natural children Mary Campbell (wife of James Campbell), Eliza Heslop widow, Eleanor Fairweather (wife of Alexander Fairweather), Charlotte Baines (wife of George Neville Baines), Jane Heslop and Alexander Heslop as tenants in common.

Signed 23/05/1845.

Codicil dated 27/02/1846. In case my daughter Eliza Heslop should not survive me then to my grand-daughter Charlotte Allan Heslop, her daughter, to have an equal share with my children in my will.

Proved at London 31/03/1847 by James Campbell and Eliza Heslop.
