Born c. 1760. Son of William McDowall (1719-1784), brother of William McDowall (1749-1810), and briefly MP for Banffshire. He took the extra name of Grant after his marriage in 1790 to Eleanor Mary, daughter and heiress of Alexander Grant of Arndilly (q.v.). Served as Collector of Customs at Kingston 1810-1836.
