Biography

Resident slave-owner and surgeon.

  1. John Ewart manumitted Charlotte Tucker and her child Jane Agnes 19/07/1824.

  2. John Ewart and his wife Mary Grace had four children baptised in St Thomas-in-the-Vale: Mary Grace (baptised 05/05/1830, died at sea 13/06/1839); William Shand (baptised 10/06/1831); Margaret Borland (baptised 26/08/1832); and John (baptised 04/02/1834). In the records of the death of his eldest daughter and the baptism of his youngest son he is described as John Edward of Mulloch, and a surgeon.

  3. Surgeon in the St Thomas-in-the-Vale troop of the Middlesex Regiment of Horse in 1824; Member of Assembly for St Thomas-in-the-Vale in 1839; agent-general of immigrants in 1841; in the Jamaica Almanac of 1851 he was given as Custos in Vere, Assistant Judge or Magistrate in St Thomas-in-the-Vale and Clarendon.

  4. Among several medical practitioners who died from cholera in 1850, when described as of Clarendon (presumably the 1851 almanac was based on positions in late 1850). Clarendon was possibly the place of his practice.
