Born 17 January 1794 on St Kitts. Prominent slavery abolitionist, lawyer and writer. Became an advocate for immediate rather than gradual abolition. A London lawyer, he appeared in the compensation records in connection with one claim in Westmoreland, Jamaica as solicitor acting for others.
In 1855 emigrated to Melbourne, Australia where he worked as a barrister. Died in Melbourne in 1879.
Stephen part of a distinguished family. His father, James Stephen (1758-1832) was a strong abolitionist. One of his brothers was Sir James Stephen (1789-1859) who became permanent under-secretary at the Colonial Office from 1836-1847. One of James Stephen’s children was Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), writer and historian, who was the father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.
