Biography

Counterclaimant for Antigua claim no. 24 where he is "of Amherstburgh[sic], Upper Canada and for a number of other related claims in Antigua and Montserrat. He was ostensibly unsuccessful, the awards being made to George Savage Martin (q.v.), but Cuthbert probably shared in the settlement reached among the claimants under the awards. Grandson of Alexander Willock, whose daughter and co-heiress Elizabeth married Robert Cuthbert.

  1. Robert Alexander Cuthbert, son of Robert and Elizabeth Cuthbert, was born 12/08/1805 and baptised 17/09/1805 at Holy Trinity, Hull, Yorkshire. He enlisted as an Ensign in the East Yorkshire Regiment (15th Foot) in 1823 and married Rosamund Mary Anne Orde in Winslade, Hampshire, 14/02/1832. In 1851 Robert A. Cuthbert, age 45, Major in the Army, born in Hull, Yorkshire, was living at 12 Banks Town, Minster in Sheppey, Kent, with his wife Rosamund, children Rosamund (age 16, born Upper Canada), Elizabeth (age 13, born Winslade, Hampshire), a governess, a male army servant and 3 female servants. In 1841 "Mrs Cuthbert" was living without Robert at Winslade, Hampshire. In 1861 he was living with his family at High Street, Rectory, Odiham, Hampshire, in the household of his sister-in-law Maria D. B. Bolton, "Dowager Baroness". In 1871 he was living at Allt Dinas, Cheltenham, with his daughter Elizabeth and 3 female servants.

  2. Death "November 27, at Allt Dinas, Cheltenham, Colonel Robert Alexander Cuthbert, late 15th Regiment, aged 67."

  3. The will of Robert Alexander Cuthbert, Colonel in Her Majesty's Army, who died at Cheltenham 27/11/1873 was proved by Robert Thomas Powlett Cuthbert the son, of Allt Dinas Cheltenham Esquire, a Major in the Army and Samuel Greg Rathbone of Yew Tree House, Woolton near Liverpool, the executors. Effects under £8000.
