1788 - 1841
Claimed unsuccessfully for the compensation for the Samuel Harman estate on Antigua as owner-in-fee. His connection if any to Samuel Harman the husband of Lavinia Harman (q.v.) who claimed on an estate in Jamaica has not yet been established.
Samuel Harman West Indian planter was the father of Samuel Bickerton Harman (1819-1892), in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography as lawyer, accountant, politician and civil servant. Samuel Bickerton Harman was born at Brompton London: his mother was Dorothy Bruce Murray. This Samuel Harman made a will in 1840 on leaving Antigua, bequeathing his estate 'Harman's' to his son Samuel Bickerton Harman subject to him paying each of his brothers £1000.
The will of Samuel Harman I of Antigua (1696-1759), the first of four successive Samuel Harmans and son of William Harman (d. 1708), presumably the original founder of the eponymous estate, was proved 24/10/1760. His son was Samuel Harman II (1730-1767); his grandson Samuel Harman III (1764-1815); and his great grandson the Samuel Harman IV (1788-1841) of this entry.
Samuel Bickerton Harman was presumably named after Sir Richard Hussey Bickerton, MP for Poole 1808-1812, in the ODNB as 'naval officer', who had married Anne, daughter of James Harman of Antigua on 25/09/1788 (d.s.p.).
