Biography

John Chambers (q.v.) of Letterkenny Ireland was awarded part of the compensation having counterclaimed as representative of Brooke Rynd mortgagee deceased for the enslaved people on Cheltenham estate, Mustique, St Vincent.

  1. "Nov. 8 [Death] In Southampton-street, Covent Garden, Brookes [sic] Rynd, Esq. late of St. Vincent." Will of Brooke Rynd of No. 11 Southampton Street Covent Garden proved 11/03/1826. Brooke Rynd aged 60 was buried at St Paul Covent Garden 15/11/1825. His probate inventory, dated July 1828, lists him as Brooke Rynd, esq of Island of Mastegna [sic], St Vincent, West Indies died Hampshire Street, Middlesex.

  2. In 1812 Brooke Rynd and Johnson Littledale (q.v.) executed a memorandum of understanding whereby Johnson Littledale returned the Rutland estate on Mustique to Brooke Rynd 'with the negroes thereto belonging', with Rynd agreeing to pay the appraisal value for all enslaved people born since Littledale took possession of the estate. Rutland does not appear as a separate estate in the Slave Registers: possibly it was later consolidated with - or the enslaved people transferred to - the Cheltenham estate, of which Rynd was mortgagee. Rutland Hill on Mustique appears a short distance from Cheltenham).
