John Russell Moore

Resident Jamaican planter.

1. Half-brother of Thomas Dale Tate; the mother of both men was Rachel Russell (1755-1837), a woman born in Westmoreland, Jamaica. Both John Russell Moore and Thomas Dale Tate were born in Jamaica. John Russell Moore's father was Henry Moore.

Husband of Ann Mary Jane Moore (q.v.), and father of his natural children Alice Moore, Archibald Moore, Henry Hampson Moore, Felicia Moore, Jane Moore, John Moore and Mary Moore (each of whom q.v.).

1. Under a codicil dated 24/08/1829 to John (Russell) Moore's will, Moore envisaged his executors selling his half of Amity to Archibald Campbell.

2. When Deborah Heath Moore, the daughter of John Russell and Ann Mary Jane Moore, was married by license in London in 1826 to Robert Briggs, Ann Mary Jane Moore was a witness, as were William Vaughan and Petty Vaughan: although John Russell Moore was shown as giving his consent (his daughter was a minor), it is not as clear that he was present.

3. John Russell Moore died in 1829. His executors James Grant and Henry [Hampson] Moore (q.v., John Moore's natural son) were awarded the compensation for King's Pen in Westmoreland and one moiety of the compensation for the Amity estate, again in Westmoreland (the other half was awarded to the administrators of Archibald Campbell).

The suggestion that he was the son of Sir John Moore of Corunna, by Mary Brown later Tate, which appears in a number of genealogical sites, has no support from the ODNB entry on Sir John Moore or the will of Sir John Moore.
