Biography

Demerara slave-owner, dying in 1829, son of William Campbell of Ormsary and half-brother of Duncan Campbell of St Vincent (q.v.). The executors and trustees of Farquhard Campbell were awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on Melville Ormsary and Strath Campbell in British Guiana.

  1. "Marriage at Edinburgh of Farquhard Campbell, Esq., of Huntington and Miss Penuel Jane Baillie, daughter of the late Hon. William Baillie of Polkemmet."

  2. Memorial inscription at Knapdale Cemetery, Argyll, Scotland: "Sacred to the memory of FARQUHARD CAMPBELL, ESQ OF ORMSARY and Melville Estate Demerary. Who died at Edinburgh 18 December 1829, aged 69" and also of Penuel Jane Baillie who died 1866 and their son William Campbell of the 42nd Regiment who died 1867.

  3. In 1851, Penuel Jane Campbell was living at Ormsary House in South Knapdale, Argyll, age 58, annuitant, born Midlothian, in the household of her son William A. Campbell age 32.

  4. Farquhard Campbell's will shows that he had three 'natural' children: Mary, who married William Salmon in Bristol in 1818; Farquhard junior, who was in Demerara in 1827 when his father wrote his will; and a 'natural coloured son' James who, in 1827, was at school in Straven [Strathaven]. His estate in Britain was valued at £23,888 19s 6d, most of which was held on account with John Campbell sen. & Co. Farquhard's legitimate son Farquhar died 16 Sep 1881 in Geneva, having bought the island of Rum in 1870.
