Biography

Awarded part of the compensation for the enslaved people on Woodstock estate in St Ann Jamaica, one among dozens of legatees of William White, including William Hadgley, conceivably her father but more likely her brother.

  1. Elisabeth Hadgley, daughter of William and Elisabeth Hadgley of Nortonfolgate, born 12/07/1789 was baptised 08/08/1789 at St Leonard Shoreditch. Although this Elisabeth Hadgley appears to have married John Fitall at St John Hackney 02/02/1828 and therefore should not appear in the compensation records under her maiden name, a connection might be suggested by the fact that on her death in 1884 (aged 95) Elisabeth Fitall nee Hadgley's address was given as 10A Arbour Square Stepney, where other claimants under the same award (the Dolge sisters) had been living in the 1850s.
